Creating a Virtual Project Management System for Enterprise Software Configuration Projects
As part of the requirements for the MScIS degree, Michael is working on a research project for his thesis. The research will create a Project Management System to aid a Project Manager effectively manage an enterprise software configuration project, remotely. The research problem that will be investigated is made up of three distinct components:
- Virtual project management
- Configuration of commercial off the shelf software within an enterprise
- Development of a project management system
The research topic is very specific with the intent to develop something of high-value for Project Managers working on these specific types of projects. The three components will be researched independently to allow for future improvements in either of the components to be integrated into the Project Management System. Future research could build on the results of this research and build Project Management Systems for different types of projects. The final research result will be the culmination of the research in the three areas into one, integrated approach that will aim to combine the strengths of each component into one, optimal system.
The goal of the research is to create a Project Management System that will enable organizations to effectively use remote project managers on software configuration projects. The research will be targeted at professional Project Managers who are familiar with project terminology and generally accepted project management processes. The research is not intended to teach a non-project manager how to be a Project Manager, but rather aid a Project Manager who knows what they need to do in order to successfully complete a project.
Ideally, the research will become a trusted and reliable resource so that when a Project Manager is assigned to a project they can reference the research results and determine where in the process they are. Some Project Managers might be assigned to a project after it's already started. The Project Manager can then assess the current state of the project and move forward with the aid of the Project Management System from that point forward. Project Managers will not need to use the Project Management System from start to finish, they can use only the pieces they need.
